Two Soldiers, Behind the Line

First Lieutenant Darren White is stuck behind Soviet lines in occupied West Germany with what is left of his cavalry troop, waiting for a reason to do something about it.

White and his second in command, Maurice Fitzgerald, run joint operations with a Special Forces team in the Fulda Gap and turn up something they were never meant to find. The Soviets have a way to win the war. Stopping it takes an operation that only works if two men who do not much like each other can hold it together.

Elsewhere, Sergeant Will Harland wakes up in a Russian prison camp, an Abrams gunner with nothing to gun. Put to work in a field hospital, he learns that a senior American officer in his care is about to be sent east and taken apart for what he knows. Saving him means giving up his own chance of getting out.

Abigail ★★★★★

The way White’s isolation behind enemy lines is written makes you feel the tension and waiting alongside him. I’ve already ordered the next book to see what happens when he finally gets his chance to act.

I’ve always wondered what it’s really like being stranded behind enemy lines, and this book nails that feeling of waiting and tension. The way the author describes White’s frustration and the daily grind of surviving in occupied West Germany feels incredibly real. Definitely a solid read if you like

The way White's cavalry troop makes do with scraps behind enemy lines kept me turning pages way past midnight. Book three keeps the same gritty pace as the earlier ones, and the standoff chapters felt painfully real. Best military fiction I've picked up this year.
