The Pacific Battle History Almost Forgot

Bougainville was never meant to be conquered. It was meant to be a place to put an airfield so that Rabaul could be cut off and left to rot. Nobody told the Japanese garrison that.

Hold the beachhead, or push it back into the sea.

Infantry, machine gun teams, mortars, artillery support and armoured vehicles, at platoon and company level. The fighting runs through thick jungle, across rivers and over ground that was difficult before anybody started shooting on it.

You Cannot See Very Far

Jungle cuts visibility and slows movement, so you commit to a plan before you know what you are committing against. Position carefully and you get a warning. Position badly and the first sign is contact.

Both Sides of a Long Campaign

The scenarios take key moments from the campaign and let you fight them from either side, which is where you find out that the Allied problem and the Japanese problem were not the same problem at all.

Aurora ★★★★★

The rulebook is surprisingly clear for a game of this complexity, making it easy to get the strategic tension of cutting off Rabaul. I've already played through the first scenario twice, and the historical notes really add to the atmosphere.

Elizabeth Q. ★★★★★

The historical detail in the rulebook really brings the campaign to life, and the asymmetric objectives for each side make every playthrough tense. I've already set up three solo scenarios to learn the system.

Sofia ★★★★★

I've played a lot of Pacific theater games and this one actually captures how the Bougainville campaign was really a sideshow to isolate Rabaul rather than a grand conquest. The solitaire rules work well enough that I've run the whole campaign twice without needing an opponent.
