The First Day at Gettysburg

Nobody planned to fight at Gettysburg. Two armies felt their way across southern Pennsylvania and slammed into each other at a crossroads town, for no better reason than that the roads met there.

You take command on the first of July 1863, before Cemetery Ridge and Little Round Top became names every American knows. Confederate columns come down from the north and the west while a thin Union line has to hold the ridges long enough for the rest of the army to arrive.

How It Plays

Move your infantry by formation, place your guns where they can see, and make the ground pay for every yard the enemy takes. Watch which way a unit is facing when the charge lands, because morale settles more of these battles than firepower does, and reinforcements arrive on their own schedule, so where you are standing when they appear matters as much as what you do next.

The Scenarios

Can Lee break the line on day one? Can the Union hold until dark? Several scenarios drop you into different hours of that first day, and several of them are built for solo play.

Sophia O. ★★★★★

I've played this scenario three times now and each game reveals new tactical decisions. The way the rules handle the chaotic arrival of units on the first day really makes you feel the confusion.

Edward U. ★★★★★

The fog-of-war setup here is brutal in the best way — you honestly feel like you're groping toward the enemy just like the commanders did. Took us nearly four hours to finish the first day and nobody wanted to stop.

Adam ★★★★☆

The map and counters look great, and the rules do a nice job capturing the confusion of the first day. My only small gripe is that the setup took a bit longer than I expected.
